Viridium Cruxten grew up with his parents and older brother. His brother Ralimer stayed to defend faith with sword and shield while he went to be a part of the Cyran army. The idea of going to exotic places, experiencing new cultures, meeting interesting people and killing them was appealing to Viridium.
The destruction of Cyre struck Viridium very hard. He valued his nation and moreso his family. When he heard about the events on the Day of Mourning he set out to his home. Only to be obstructed by the fog that surrounds the Mournland. Deep down he still feels his brother is alive somewhere.
Along with finding his brother he wants to seek the truth about how Cyre became the Mournlands and make those responsible either right the wrongs or pay with their life.
Through his training and personality he is self-reliant. However, his father has told Viridium many times, “A wise man seeks council.” Now that his parents are gone the things he has been taught by them have a firmer place in his heart.
Viridum has a fascination for engineering and mechanical devices. In his time in the army he was usually set out to destroy or sabotage the enemy’s siege weapons and fortifications because of his knowledge. He knows more than most when it comes to engineering but he is just an amateur. He would like to be more capable in this skill and construct a better crossbow.
Recalling the Day of Mourning
The Day of Mourning also happened to be his one year anniversary of his service to the Cyran army. He was stationed in Thrane as an infiltrator, hiding in the Harrowcrowns. Viridium’s close friend and fellow soldier Karren had prepared him a morning meal to celebrate. They first started with a brother-sister relationship, not afraid to be hard on each other but also free to joke around. As that first year came to an end they started feeling closer.
He was about to take his first bite when there was a tremendous flash of light from the east, towards Cyre. Viridium and Karren quickly scrambled with the rest of the soldiers to figure out what was going on. Their commanding officer ordered the group to begin their mission hours before it was scheduled to start. Viridium, Karren and others protested but they had to follow orders.
The Cyran group followed with their mission as planned but the enemy was ready for them. They fought long and hard but were obviously going to lose. As they were retreating, Viridium sees an arrow pierce through his commanding officer’s throat. Before the body could hit the ground the officer had reverted to his changling form. Karren also ends up mortally wounded in the retreat.
Viridium and Karren eventually find a safe place. Both of them accept her impending death and reveal their feelings for each other. Her last words to him were, “You didn’t even take a bite of the meal I made for you. I … guess it would be you that would be dying … if you did….” She gave him a last smile before passing away. He takes her necklace that he made for her and wears it with the necklace she made for him.
To Viridium, the Day of Mourning happened twice. Once for the nation he loved and another for the woman he loved. The first bite of every meal reminds him of this.
What he thinks about what happened on the Day of Mourning
He honestly doesn’t know what caused the Day of Mourning. He considers it folly to take any theory without proper evidence as truth.
However, he does wonder if House Cannith was experimenting on the next level of the warforged. He greatly respects their ability to create, but is also wary of them. He has his eye on the surviving House Cannith and holds no anger toward them…. yet.
He will probably look to help House Orien since they would mostly benefit in the restoration of Cyre by reconnecting the lighting rail between the east and west. Currently House Lyrandar has the ability to travel between western Khorvaire and Karranth since they can fly over the Mournlands with their airships while House Orien with their lightning rail cannot.
Viridium plans on taking an airship to go east not for a particular destination, but to get a bird’s eye view of the Mournlands to see what is left and if there’s any way to get through the fog. The fog might not matter if he can just get a hold of a feather fall potion….
